"The male is alleged to have picked up a firearm from the steps and pointed it at the workers, warning them to leave him alone," police spokesman Scott Pattison said in the release.
"The workers quickly fled the area," he said. Alberta Sheriffs, who are responsible for security at the legislature building and on the legislature grounds, took the man into custody.
Police said the man had two firearms, one of which was loaded, when they took him into custody, and he is facing "various firearm-related" charges.
Early Wednesday afternoon, the words "corupte," "law," "society," and other markings had been spray-painted on the stone of the north steps of the legislature, while the doors were covered with black plastic.
