Every month, ABC Carolinas (ABCC) partners with local Boy Scout Councils in Raleigh, Charlotte and Charleston for the "Build-It" Explorers Club. This program teaches important life and career skills to young people from all backgrounds through immersive career experience and mentorship provided by community and business leaders. The goal is to equip young people with character, leadership and life skills that can be used both today, and in their future careers.

March started with the Raleigh "Build-It" Explorer's Club working with Choate Construction as the ABCC member volunteer. Students learned about technology in construction with BIM and VDC, and had an opportunity to walk through a neighboring jobsite to talk through the construction process.

The following weekend the Charleston "Build-It" Explorer's Club continued work on their dog house. Students were taught by ABC Carolinas member volunteer Miller-Valentine Group, whose team covered the multitude of careers available in construction, with a focus on drone use. After learning about construction careers, students had the opportunity to install the siding and roof trusses on the dog house. The students were given the chance to utilize the palm nailer, a new tool to them – something that's fun and expedient to use!

March wrapped up with the Charlotte "Build-It" Explorer's Club working with ABCC member volunteer, Clancy & Theys Construction Company. They taught about PPE and its importance in construction. Students then learned how technology is used in construction with Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and drones. They learned that a building is often built twice – virtually then physically. Students also learned about the importance of communication between architects and builders and how critical this communication is in helping to avoid failed structures.

ABC Carolinas extends a big thank you to all of its member companies that are helping teach the young minds through the "Build-It" Explorers Club and other activities.

ABC Carolinas represents the merit construction contractors and related firms in the Carolinas as a chapter of ABC, a national association representing more than 25,000 members. Visit us at www.abccarolinas.org.
