Let's cut to the chase: are hair perfumes necessary? Absolutely not. Are they a fun, often less expensive alternative to regular perfume? Absolutely. If you're on a fragrance kick and looking to expand your collection, give one of the best hair perfumes on the market a go and maybe you'll ditch your standard eau de parfum for good.

How does hair fragrance compare to regular perfume, you ask? While they're not a monolith, there are a couple of traits to look out for while perusing and deciphering cryptic scent descriptions. "Hair perfumes or mists usually contain hydrating properties like hyaluronic acid and other natural ingredients that cover odor, have UV ray protection, and give your hair just the right texture and shine," writes New York City- and Columbus-based hairstylist Mia Santiago. Keep an eye out for hair-loving ingredients to tackle frizz and dryness, on top of making your hair smell impeccable.

Hair perfumes are also more likely to be alcohol-free than their standard counterparts, which earns themselves a big A-plus from Santiago. She notes that because of the alcohol content, regular perfume "would be very drying to your hair and can cause breakage."

And just because you're adding new beauty products to your arsenal doesn't necessarily mean entering totally uncharted olfactory waters. Some of the top names in fragrance like Byredo, Diptyque, and Maison Francis Kurkdjian make scented hair versions of multiple of their beloved, iconic fragrances. The hair versions tend to be more subtle and fade faster than regular perfume, but they're also usually way cheaper, which feels like a fair trade.

Even though Kayali bottles don't have Huda Kattan's name printed across them, the quality and vision behind this luxury fragrance line is just so her. Kayali is mostly standard perfumes, but don't sleep on the Déjà Vu White Flower Hair Mist when you're restocking your vanity. A couple of spritzes from this warm floral mist scents and softens hair with aloe vera and camellia oil.

Everything from Ashley Tisdale's brand Being Frenshe smells really, really good. The recently launched wellness-focused line features five scents with different objectives, like calming, energizing, blissing you out, etc. Cashmere Vanilla (pictured above) is a mature take on the classic, sweet aroma and encourages you to take a moment to find your inner peace.

Sol de Janeiro is best known for its Readers' Choice Award-winning Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, which smooths skin, restores elasticity, and smells like an expensive dessert. The Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Cheirosa '62 Hair & Body Fragrance Mist shares the Bum Bum Cream's notes of salted caramel, pistachio, and vanilla so the sweetness is strong — but despite the gourmand of it all, the fragrance is layerable and isn't too intense.

Gisou adding a honey-infused hair fragrance to its lineup is hardly surprising, but being predictable is fine when all of your products are nourishing, luxurious, and smell so. Damn. Good. Made with honey from the Mirsaleh bee garden in Holland, Gisou's Honey Infused Hair Perfume hydrates hair and tames frizz, while adding a touch of sweetness to whatever perfume you're wearing that day.

Oribe's Côte D'Azur Hair Refresher is what you'd get if a hair perfume and a dry shampoo had a shiny, golden baby. This spray neutralizes odor and cuts static, so second-day hair looks (and smells) just like the first. The brand's signature jasmine, sandalwood, and bergamot fragrance is just the icing on the cake.

Fans of the classic rose scent: Acqua di Parma's Rosa Nobile Hair Mist is for you. This Best of Beauty winner imparts a delicate floral scent on the hair, while a conditioning agent in the formula makes strands of all hair types feel like silk. And don't worry about it smelling too garden-like — the musk and cedarwood notes rise up once the perfume dries down.

What's better than smelling like Byredo's Mohave Ghost eau de parfum? Smelling like Byredo's Mohave Ghost Hair Perfume, which costs less than $100. Inspired by the plants that dare to flourish in the arid Mohave Desert, the floral notes in this fragrance pop out from the woody, musk base. Pair with the regular perfume for a truly immersive olfactory experience.

Fable & Mane's HoliRoots Hibiscus Hydrating Hair Oil Mist is hair care first and fragrance second — and that's what we love about it. This oil-mist hybrid is packed with nourishing gooseberry and squalane for lightweight yet effective hydration, but the fruity, floral scent is so nice you almost forget that it's good for your hair, too.

The illustration by Matthieu Cossé on the bottle of Diptyque's Ilio Hair Mist is so beautiful that it almost doesn't matter what it smells like, but we all know the French perfume house isn't one to slack off when it comes to scents. This floral fragrance is light and powdery, with notes of prickly pear and iris that transport you straight to the Mediterranean coast.

For glossy hair that also smells divine, look no further than the Aussie Lustr Shine Enhancing Hair Perfume. This spray deposits a subtle, universally-flattering shimmer and coats the hair with its manuka honey-infused formula for glass-like, shiny hair.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris Baccarat Rouge 540 is another TikTok darling that also comes as a hair perfume. Luckily for you, the matching Scented Hair Mist is just as sophisticated and gourmand as the original. The amber, saffron, and cedar notes are still there, just in a slightly more subtle form, so this mist moves with your hair and never comes across as too in-your-face.

Yes, you read that right: the TikTok-famous, hard-to-pin-down fragrance Juliette Has a Gun also comes in hair and body mist form. This formula shares the scent of its musky sibling eau de parfum, but it's alcohol-free and even more subtle. The warm woody notes in the bottle mix with your natural scent for an olfactory result that's all your own.
